What factors do you consider when choosing low-level hardware for projects?

Choosing the right low-level hardware for a new project can be a challenge, especially with so many options out there. It can be tough to decide between reliable, established processors and the latest semiconductor technologies that are just emerging in 2026.

Availability and support are also critical factors. I’ve run into issues where the newest components were difficult to find, causing delays in the project timeline. For those of you who have been in this position, what do you prioritize when selecting hardware? Are there particular brands or models you trust for their reliability or innovative features? What experiences have you had with new hardware—did it turn out to be a game-changer or a bit of a setback?

I usually stick with well-known brands, especially for projects with tight timelines. Recently had a nightmare with a new chip I thought would be great, but it was out of stock for weeks. Sometimes sticking to older tech can save you a lot of headache in the long run.

I tend to stick with more established brands like Microchip or STMicroelectronics for reliability, especially when time is tight. I once tried a flashy new chip for a project, and it ended up being a total headache with driver issues and availability problems. Now I always check support forums too before making a decision!
