Is Modding the Game Boy Advance SP Still Worth It in 2026?

With so many new handheld consoles and modding options out there, I’m starting to wonder if the Game Boy Advance SP still makes sense for modding in 2026. I’ve been into collecting various handhelds, and while I’ve seen some fantastic mods for the GBA SP, I’m questioning whether the time and money are worth it compared to newer devices.

I definitely appreciate the nostalgia that comes with the GBA SP, but given the advancements in screen technology and hardware, does it still have that special modding appeal? Has anyone here recently done a mod on one of these? Or do you think it’s better to invest in something more modern? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with GBA SP mods versus newer alternatives!

I still think modding the GBA SP can be cool, especially for the nostalgia factor, but if you’re looking for a better screen or battery life, newer handhelds can’t be beat. I just finished a backlit mod on mine, and it was a fun project, but some of the new devices have insane features that make it hard to justify the effort. What’s your favorite recent handheld?

I think the GBA SP still has its charm, especially with the right mods. You can slap on a new IPS screen, and it’s like a whole new experience! Plus, it’s more fun tinkering with the older ones than just buying a new handheld. If you love collecting, modding the SP is still a cool project.
