Has anyone successfully automated their home with old gadgets?

Recently, while working on my latest home automation project, I discovered a box filled with old gadgets I had forgotten about. Inside were a couple of outdated smart speakers and some quirky sensors I’d picked up from thrift stores. Instead of throwing them away, I thought it would be fun to see if I could integrate them into my setup.

So far, it’s been a mixed experience. Some devices paired surprisingly well with my current system, while others required a lot of fiddling just to get them recognized. I’m really curious if anyone else out there has had luck using older gadgets in their smart home setups. What creative ways have you found to repurpose tech that you thought was obsolete?

Do you believe older gadgets can still add value in today’s smart homes, or is it wiser to invest in newer technology? What challenges have you encountered while trying to integrate them?

I’ve had some luck with old smart bulbs and even a pre-owned thermostat. The bulbs work fine, but the thermostat took ages to figure out and still doesn’t play nice with everything. Sometimes it feels like those older gadgets are more trouble than they’re worth, but it’s kind of satisfying when they finally click.

I’ve had some luck using old smart plugs and cameras from a few years ago. They’re not as flashy as the newest stuff, but you can often find hacks online that breathe new life into them. Just be ready for some trial and error; sometimes they act unpredictable. Have you tried using any open-source software to help with the integration? It can really open up possibilities!
