Best Places to Buy Used Laptops for Tech Projects

Finding a trustworthy source for used laptops can be tough. With so many options, from online marketplaces to local retailers, it’s hard to know which are actually worth it. I’m looking for older models to repurpose for some tech projects I’m working on, but not all used laptops are created equal. Some sellers overhype their products, while others sell devices that barely work.

I’ve been checking out sites like eBay and Mercari, but I’ve also heard good things about local electronics shops that sell refurbished laptops. Has anyone had success with particular vendors or platforms? What should someone look for when assessing a used laptop for tinkering?

Are there specific features or brands that hold up better for DIY projects? I’d love to hear your experiences!

I’ve had mixed luck with eBay—some sellers are great, but I’ve also gotten some lemons. I found local thrift stores and charity shops can have solid deals too, and you can actually check the laptops in person. As for brands, I’d recommend sticking with ThinkPads; they’re super durable for projects.
