Are Retro Handhelds Still Worth Modding in 2026?

With so many new handheld devices hitting the market lately, I’ve been pondering whether it’s still worthwhile to invest time and money into modding classic systems like the Game Boy or PSP. The nostalgia is definitely there, but can the experience of playing on older hardware really compete with the features and performance of today’s tech?

I imagine many of us are caught in this tug-of-war between old favorites and shiny new gadgets. What motivates you to keep modding those vintage devices, especially when there are so many new options available?

Have you found specific mods that really enhance your retro gaming experience? Or are you more focused on keeping up with the latest handhelds? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I think there’s still something special about modding old handhelds. I just added an IPS screen to my Game Boy, and it totally transforms the experience—way more vibrant than I remember! New stuff is cool, but nothing beats the feel of those classic games on upgraded hardware.

Modding retro handhelds can be super fun, but honestly, I feel like a lot of the hype fades when the new models have so much better performance and features. I still enjoy upgrading my Game Boy for the nostalgia, but it definitely feels less practical compared to what you can get with newer tech. Have you seen any awesome mods that actually make a big difference in gameplay?
